The scientific, educational and artistic endeavors of J. A. Panitz
J. A. Panitz received his Ph.D. degree in Physics from Erwin W. Müller in the Field Emission Laboratory at the Pennsylvania State University.
His dissertation thesis, called the The Atom Probe FIM (Field Ion Microscope), described the first instrument able to "determine the nature of one single atom seen on a metal surface and selected from neighboring atoms at the discretion of the observer". After graduation, Dr. Panitz joined Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque New Mexico where he developed the Imaging Atom-Probe mass spectrometer, the archetype of commercial atom probe instruments.
After fifteen years at Sandia Laboratories Dr. Panitz joined the faculty of the University of New Mexico (UNM) as Professor of Physics and Professor of Cell Biology in the School of Medicine. At UNM he taught undergraduate physics, created courseware and developed techniques for Atom-Probe analysis of the liquid-solid interface.
In 1993 Dr. Panitz founded High-Field Consultants. Recently he extended his technical expertise into the creation of websites and original works of art.
