The Pennsylvania State University housed the Field Emission Laboratory which was the focal point of high field research from its inception in 1950 by Erwin Müller until Erwin’s death in 1977. Numerous graduate students, post doctoral students and support personnel created a vibrant atmosphere. In 1956 the low temperature Field Ion Microscope was created and individual atoms on a metal surface were clearly resolved for the first time. In 1968 the Atom-Probe Field Ion Microscope was created and individual atoms in a Field Ion Microscope image could be unambiguously identified.
